Small notes kept in order, before the day rewrites them.

Five steps and a trolley
Market stairs are steep enough to slow gossip. Aunties still exchange news on the landing without blocking traffic.
Vegetable stalls send mist and colour upward. The stairs are a threshold between outside heat and inside bargaining.
A boy counts five steps aloud for a game only he understands. Measurement returns whenever adult tasks feel abstract.
The stairs smell of onion skins and detergent from the floor wash at opening. Clean and dirty coexist without debate.
Halfway down a vendor calls my name though I bought once weeks ago. I buy ginger I do not need to honour recognition.
At the bottom I circle the fish stall without buying. Ice gleams under fluorescent light. I write none of their names without permission.
Climbing up with a trolley is harder than descending empty. I rest on the top step and watch bags pass like boats on a canal.
Stairs teach that descent is easy and ascent earns lunch. The metaphor feels earned because lunch waits upstairs.
I photograph paint peeling in a shape like a map. The photo stays unused except as memory backup on my phone.
Jurong West survives on these small vertical connections between street and stall. Remove the stairs and stories spill differently.
Void deck tiles hold yesterday rain in their grooves until noon evaporates the proof along Jurong West Street 81.
Lift buttons wear smooth where thumbs repeat the same floor request at shift change.
Kopitiam chatter at seven am is neighbourhood language I translate slowly for the binder page.
Copper railings near Boon Lay warm under palm before the sun reaches the pavement below.
MRT air tastes recycled yet familiar like a library book returned on time to the interchange.
Evening incense drifts toward the avenue without asking permission from the block committee.
Notebook margins collect bus ticket numbers used as bookmarks between jots.
Rain on covered walks sounds like distant applause for nobody in particular on Chin Swee nights.
Block laundry lines tell weather stories better than any application on my phone screen.
Footsteps on stairwells change pitch with humidity I note without instruments or graphs.
The estate smells of frying garlic and rain in combinations that refuse tidy taxonomy.
Writing at the kitchen table keeps me honest about domestic interruptions and kettle timing.
Park connector puddles mirror block lights until a bus passes and breaks the reflection.
Market chalk marks prices in characters that fade by afternoon heat and foot traffic.
Binder tabs organise memory the way queue numbers organise morning kopi without ranking importance.
